The removalists and cleaners can never work in the property at the same time, but logistically speaking they always need to be booked together. The removalists always have to come before the cleaners. There are time windows for each step and the entire process is planned around the inspection date. If something goes wrong and the removalists come after the cleaners, the tenants will usually end up paying for an unnecessary re-clean.
If you are booking house removalists in your city and an end of lease clean together, these are the steps in the correct order.
Reasons a Clean Cannot Be Done With Furniture in Place
An end of lease clean requires the provider to clean or inspect a wide range of areas: floors and walls, skirting boards, sliding door tracks, ceiling fans, exhaust fan covers, and the interior of the oven. It is not possible to perform any of these tasks with furniture obstructing the areas to be cleaned.
A provider will not be able to clean the floor where a couch is standing. They will also not be able to clean skirting boards if boxes are stacked against the walls blocking access. Agents assess the property against the condition it was in at the start of the tenancy. Under the residential tenancy legislation in each state, Consumer Affairs Victoria and equivalent bodies in other states require the tenant to return the property in the same condition, fair wear and tear excepted. If surfaces are inaccessible during the clean, they cannot meet that standard.
A standard end of lease clean covering a 2-3 bedroom property takes between 4 and 8 hours to complete. The property needs to be completely empty for the full duration. You need to schedule both services at least two weeks prior to your move-out date. Month-end Saturdays are hard to get for both.
The Weekend Sequence That Actually Works

This will show you the process that actually works for booking end of lease cleans and moves on the same weekend, across the Urgent Pro marketplace. For the order of tasks within the moving day itself, see the full moving day running order.
Friday
- Switch off the fridge to defrost
- Remove and disconnect both the washing machine and dishwasher
All of the above need to be done before the removalists arrive. The fridge needs to be dry inside and out before it is loaded. Both removalists and cleaners work best with clear access to the walls and floors behind the appliances.
Saturday
- Early start for removalists, the earlier the better
- Aim to have the property emptied and available for the cleaners by early afternoon
- Cleaners are expected to arrive once the property is completely emptied
- Take photos of each empty room for documentation before the cleaners start
- Carpets cannot be walked on until fully dry after steam cleaning
What the eight-week moving checklist covers sets out the earlier preparation steps this weekend run depends on. The checklist only works if packing and labelling, utility notifications, and parking permit arrangements have been handled in the weeks before.
The Timing Gaps Most Tenants Miss
These are the most common oversights tenants make when trying to carry out both services over the same weekend.
- Disconnecting the fridge and other appliances. The fridge and other appliances
should be disconnected at least 24 hours before the removalists arrive. The area behind the appliances needs to be cleaned as it is normally dusty and greasy, and it is one of the first places an agent inspects behind. How to pack each room before the move covers the kitchen preparation steps in more detail.
- Steam cleaning carpets and the drying time. Steam cleaned carpets need at least
24-48 hours to dry before the inspection. Booking the inspection for the day after a steam clean automatically creates a scheduling conflict. Booking a whole-property vacate clean at least two days before the inspection date builds the drying window in automatically and avoids this conflict.
- Conflicting time windows for lifts and loading zones. The removalist company and
the building management need to coordinate the lift booking. Loading zones also need to be confirmed for the time of the move. If the moving company is scheduled for a Saturday morning pickup and the building’s service lift is only booked until noon, there is a good chance the move will run late. Confirm the lift booking with your building manager before scheduling the removalists. Removalists affiliated with the Australian Furniture Removers Association are experienced with the access requirements for service lifts and loading zones and help minimise the chance of a scheduling conflict.
- Key handover between the two providers. The moving company takes the keys to the
property and the cleaning service needs them when they arrive. It is the responsibility of the tenant to arrange the key exchange. You may choose to remain at the property until the removalists finish and hand the keys directly to the cleaner. A lockbox can also be used for the exchange.
Booking Both Services
Let the cleaning provider know the removalists’ expected finish time at least 24 hours before the weekend. How both bookings work through Urgent Pro covers the confirmation process for each service, including what is communicated to each provider at the time of booking.
Tell the cleaning provider to allow for a delay beyond the expected finish time. The buffer between the removalists’ expected finish and the clean start should be at least two hours. If the removalists are expected to finish at 1pm, book the clean for 3pm.
If an item is flagged during the final inspection, it will be re-cleaned under the cleaning warranty. The removalists and cleaning providers work independently of each other. Knowing what agents typically flag at inspections helps you brief both providers correctly on the day.
What Can Go Wrong and How to Prevent It
Removalists taking longer than expected. Their expected finish time determines when the clean can begin. Add at least two hours to the removalists’ expected finish time when booking the clean. If they expect to finish at 1pm, book the clean for 3pm.
Items left behind because they cannot be moved. Certain aerosols, propellants, and flammable liquids cannot be transported. Review what removalists won’t move before the move weekend if you have any of these categories. It is the tenant’s responsibility to dispose of these items before the end of lease inspection. The cleaner is not responsible for removing them.
Odour at the inspection. A full end of lease clean can sometimes leave a persistent odour, particularly from the oven. The odour can be removed by briefly switching the oven on, letting it cool, and doing a final wipe. To check surfaces the same way an agent does, turn off the kitchen lights and use a phone torch at a low angle across all surfaces. Book your house removalists as early as you can to lock in the time slot the entire sequence depends on.
FAQs
Can carpet steam cleaning, the end of lease clean, and the move all occur on the same day?
Yes. The end of lease clean and the carpet steam clean can happen on the same day as the move. The end of lease inspection cannot happen the day after. Allow 24-48 hours for the carpet to dry after steam cleaning. In this case the inspection can happen no earlier than Monday.
What happens if the removalists run late and the cleaners cannot access the property?
Once you have confirmed your moving day and estimated moving time, call the cleaning provider to let them know the updated estimated completion time. Most services can adjust start times if given enough notice. Cleaners are generally not permitted to enter a property that is not empty. If the cleaner arrives and the property is not clear, a rescheduling fee may apply. The best practice is to schedule the clean at least two hours after the removalists’ expected completion time.
How far in advance should I book both services?
Book both services as soon as your move-out date is confirmed. Two weeks in advance is the minimum. Month-end Saturdays are the most popular move-out day and book fast for both removalists and cleaners. The end of month is the end of many month-long leases, and the beginning of many month-to-month ones. Book as far in advance as possible and lock in the removalists first, since their finish time determines when you can book the clean.
